Multi-modal Learning Strategy

  1. Game components highlights human anatomy

  • The game cards depict color-coded body systems and mnemonic icons that represent organ function.

  • The unique, colorful anatomy guide demonstrates human anatomy and explains the icons' meaning, all on one page.

  • The fill-in-the-blank worksheet reinforces knowledge and gives educators a tool to evaluate progress.

  2. Gameplay

  • Fixing Foolish for Rookies: By matching icons on the various game cards, players learn how injuries affect the body.

  • Fixing Foolish for Pros: Students apply their knowledge to real life situations to test and deepen their understanding.

  3. Discussions

  • Since the game includes some of the most common mishaps, players often find themselves in the stories. The desire to share their own experiences sparks lively conversations, reinforcing the consequences of reckless choices.

  • CAUTION: Some of the STORY cards include topics that you may not want to discuss with younger children. Please check the cards before playing.

FIXING FOOLISH Curriculum: A 3-Step Adventure

Step 1: Study the Basics

Provide each student with:

  • one color copy (US Letter size) of the Fixing Foolish Anatomy Worksheet

  • a complete set of SYSTEM cards (The game includes 5 sets of 7 system cards)

Ask students to complete their worksheet by using the information on the cards.

Step 2: Play Fixing Foolish for Rookies

While playing, encourage students to read all information and to pronounce the names of organs as they find matching cards.

Encourage students to share their own stories.

Use this as a platform to discuss the dangers of mindless actions.

Step 3: Play Fixing Foolish for Pros

This game helps students to apply their knowledge of the body systems in real-life scenarios.

Encourage students to explain their choices.

Let them refer back to the Anatomy Worksheet and Systems Map for answers.

Guide them with questions to gain a deeper understanding of how body systems function and collaborate.

Print a flyer with this curriculum roadmap and the rules of the games.

  • US letter size, print double-sided and select 'paper source by PDF size'

  • For classroom use only

A FINAL NOTE:

The human body is an incredible creation of which the design and complexity remains far beyond our grasp. This curriculum, however, will equip students to make healthy choices in years to come. It highlights body systems and organs (names and functions) affected in the different scenarios. Some organs, such as the thymus, thyroid, spleen, spinal cord, various glands, and organs of the reproductive system, are therefore excluded.

For students who would like to explore human anatomy and physiology in more detail, consider the board game Complexity. Together these games provide teens with vital insight into the operation and maintenance of the human body in a memorable way.
